Reconstruction of the Secondary Grammar School, Grösslingova 18, Bratislava

The building and the facilities of the former Royal Catholic Grammar School located in the vicinity of a well-known Church of St. Elisabeth forming a unified complex and a jewel of Art Nouveau architecture in Slovakia the importance of which transcends the borders of the state. The Hungarian architect Edmund Lechner (1845-1914) an important figure of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture is the author of the complex. An objective of architectural and construction solution was the monument reconstruction in its original exterior and interior look from the period of its origin. During the period of reconstruction of this historical building a special attitude towards methodology of monument reconstruction had been adopted.
The main construction intervention into the structure of the Grammar School has been the removal of a mismatched extension to the back-yard facade of the street wing and the construction of a new basement floor below the level of the yard. All the inappropriate details and modifications, poorly distributed lines, inadequate floor and wall surfaces have been removed from the object. All the original art and craft pieces have been profesionally restored and the missing parts have been added. New spaces have been added for extended Physical Education classes, new kitchen and a dining hall too. The most striking feature is the change of the facade coloring from blue to yellow in accordance with the original project. In the academic year 2010/2011 the school commenced its activities in the reconstructed building.
Within the II. Stage of the project realization a high-grade reconstruction of the outer reinforced areas, playgorunds and the green took place. Supply and installation of the kitchen technology to create conditions for delivering high-level dining services formed a part of the reconstruction. It is pertinent to state that after the completed general reconstruction, sanation and structural replacements the building-technical condition of the object is fully satisfying the purpose of its use, i.e. the purpose of the Grammar School.
